Historic Environment Scotland cares for and promotes Scotland’s heritage, ensuring that the nation’s properties and wild spaces are valued and enhanced, both now and for future generations. It is responsible for more than 300 properties of national importance, including Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Fort George and numerous smaller sites, which together draw more than five million visitors per year.

We publish Historic Environment Scotland’s membership magazine, Historic Scotland, which tells the story of the nation’s heritage, from Skara Brae on Orkney to Caerlaverock Castle near Dumfries. Featuring tales of kings and queens, as well as foot soldiers in their armies and many other figures across the past 5,000 years, the magazine brings history to life for its readers.

One of the challenges the magazine faces is finding new ways to come back to familiar properties. With 75 properties and 375 monuments and standing stones, the team works closely with the staff at Historic Environment Scotland to find new angles, surprising stories and little-known facts to bring the destinations to life.

Results underline the success of the magazine, with a member survey showing that 88% have visited a Historic Environment Scotland property as a direct result of reading the publication.
